Superior, for those unfamiliar with it, is a small mining town east of Gold Canyon, Arizona and Apache Junction, Arizona. It is approximately 35 miles east of Apache Junction. In the hills to the east of the town lie many mine shafts dug to discover and take advantage of rich copper ore. Since the late 19th century, this area of Pinal County, including Globe, Ray, Kerney, Mamouth, and Oracle have produced tons of pure copper for the electrification and electronic age of the United States. Mines in this area, with the exception perhaps of Oracle, still produce today.
At our old town hall there are exhibits of yesteryear and the mining industry. For your pleasure, here are some photos of what the mining of copper is all about.
